An 8.1 magnitude earthquake has rocked parts of Chile and it has forced over one million (1,000,000) people out of their homes. With many people at risk of death and getting lost, Facebook has introduced the Safety Check feature for those in Chile.

Facebook Safety Check is a feature that would enable people in this troubled area to notify others that they are safe and alive wherever they are. Apart from notifying your friends and family of your safety, you can also use this feature to check if your friends and family are safe.

As posted on the Facebook Wall of Mark Zuckerberg,

We’ve activated Safety Check in response to the earthquake in Chile. This is a tool to quickly let your friends and family know that you’re okay.

If you live in an area affected by the earthquake, you’ll receive a Facebook notification asking if you are safe. You can also check to see if your friends are safe.

Knowing your loved ones are okay is incredibly important and it’s times like this that being connected really matters.

My thoughts are with everyone who is experiencing this devastating disaster.

So, just in case you live in Chile or you know some one that lives there and you want to be sure of their safety, Facebook Safety Check can help you tell your friends and family that you are safe and also help you know if they are safe.
